Behringer DEQ2496 Digital 24-Bit/96 kHz EQ/RTA Mastering Processor

Product Description

The deq2496 is a highprecision digital 24-bit/ 96 khz eq/rta mastering processor, ideal for sophisticated live sound trouble-shooting or audiophile mastering. whether you’re putting the finishing touches on recorded material or creating an optimal live sound for a multi-way pa, the deq2496 is built to provide meticulous control. alization? dynamics? feedback correction? yes, yes, yes. you can have it all with the deq2496. automatic fft analysis with auto eq? we added that too. the deq2496 is a whole rack of flexible equalization, dynamics and time correction functions designed to fix problems and generally optimize sound quality. naturally the deq2496 has phase-neutral digital graphic eq…but in addition we’ve added a function that allows you to change the bandwidth of each frequency from standard 1/3 to as much as 59/3. or, if you prefer the old-school approach to variable bandwidth, we’ve included 10-band parametrics that can be fine-tuned in increments down to 1/60 of an octave. dynamic eq automatically raises or lowers a defined frequency range based on volume level. it’s literally a combination of an equalizer (with frequency center and bandwidth controls) and a dynamics processor (with attack, release, threshold and ratio parameters). deq opens up a world of both creative mastering and pa problem solving possibilities. we’ve given you total control with multiple filter types including bandpass mode. and of course you can store deq settings for recall at any time manually or via midi. you can delay either the deq2496’s main or aux outputs anywhere from 0 to 300ms and can process left and right channels independently. not only can you specify time delay in feet or meters but simultaneously compensate for ambient temperature which affects sound speed!

  • Ultra-high resolution processor for all EQ, RTA and dynamic applications, especially for PA and audiophile mastering
  • 4 concurrently selectable EQ modules (31-band graphic EQ, 10-band parametric EQ, Feedback Destroyer plus 3 Dynamic EQs per stereo channel)
  • Flexible compressor/expander function with peak limiter per stereo channel as well as additional stereo imager and stereo delay for delay line applications
  • Unique VPQ (Virtual Paragraphic EQ) option allows parametric control of graphic Eqs
  • Ultra-high resolution 61-band real-time FFT analyzer with additional auto EQ function for room and loudspeaker equalization
  • The ultra-high resolution processor for all EQ, RTA and dynamic applications, especially for PA and audiophile mastering.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for studio and home stereo/High-End use!, April 20, 2011

This review is from: Behringer DEQ2496 Digital 24-Bit/96 kHz EQ/RTA Mastering Processor (Electronics)
I bought this many years ago, maybe around 2005.. It came pre-installed with the v1.4. I had heard that earlier versions had some reliability problems, like simply shutting down permanently even after short term use, or after some time.

I have used mine many times a week (often for many hours pd.), and it still works like new. I started using it in my home "pro"studio as a EQ (and even compressor and width) along with some other equipment when mastering, with great results. It really lifted the final mix so that it could be used as a presentable demo. After a while I decided to slow down my non-profit studio work (I mainly used it as a hobby to help friends release demos). Almost $40.000 (US) in gear, the studio got too expensive to maintain... I now mainly use it for different smaller projects, but have started to use the DEQ2496 with my High-End stereo (with some Snell B-Minor, tube pre-amps and Norwegian amps etc.).

OK, the Behringer DEQ2496: I bought it for... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Could be an excellent device but has heat problems, July 22, 2007

After using this unit about four times, it started crashing with a message that a "fatal error 11" had occured and to reset the device. I could no longer use the device in my live sound PA system due to its unreliability.

I put some heatsinks on the SHARC digital processor chips which were running too hot to touch with your finger. Once the heatsinks were in place, the unit did not crash even after sitting in my garage in 95 degree heat.

If not for this problem, this unit could be an excellent processor unit, superior in fact to units costing far more. The display gives extremely useful information in a clear way. The multi function EQs and compressors are excellent.

Too bad Behringer did not put 50 cent heatsinks in the unit.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Value Is Unreal!!!!, June 11, 2007

My low-end, Hi-Fi rig:

Luxman RV-371 Receiver (min. 70 watts rms/ch)
Magnat MSP 120 3-way towers (4 ohm, sealed box, (28-34k +or- 3db))
Onkyo DX-C390 6-disc Changer (transport)
JVC TD-711 Cassette Deck (15-20k +or- 3db - no joke)
Philips CDR 950 (CD Recorder)
Monster Cable Interconnects (soon to replace with Kimber Hero)
Audio Quest multi-strand speaker cable (less than $1.50/ft)
Behringer DEQ2496 (RAM-modified, basic-level mod)

I got my DEQ from Reference Audio Mods (California) with a basic-level mod for $725. I've never heard this machine in its stock form, but, having seen, online, one-too-many debates on whether or not it had stock high-frequency issues, I ended up playing it safe. But, let me back up a bit and try to relate to an audiophile, or enthusiast, just what this thing is and what it can do for a Hi-Fi.

First, this really IS a Swiss-Army knife for Hi-Fi. It is a 31-band p/ch graphic EQ, a 10-band... Read more
